Maximising Storage In Your Dining Room

My Storage Requirements

Choosing the right storage for your room depends on the size of your dining room and the style of your dining set. There are many options to choose from including sideboards, shelves, bookcases and display cabinets.

Sideboards are perfect for storing letters, tableware, books and other bits and bobs that you want out of sight. Sideboards come in different sizes from a 2 door right up to a 4 door depending on the size of your space. Choosing a sideboard will provide excellent amounts of space as well as providing a complimenting look to your dining set.

If your dining room has limited space or your simple want to utilise as much of the wall space as possible then hanging shelves is a great option. Shelves are great for placing plants, ornaments and books on.

Bookcase Storage

Bookcases come in a low or tall design depending on your room size or look you are trying to create. Bookshelves can be styled to create a beautiful eye catching piece by turning books sideways and arranging ornaments in unique displays. Your bookcase doesn’t have to be used for displaying books, many people who place bookcases in there dining room place specially decorated china on them to display there beautiful designs to there friends and family.

Display Cabinet Storage

Display cabinets are used in a similar way to bookcases, they are used to display or store there best champagne or wine glasses with beautiful glass vases or fruit bowls that you accumulate over the years. Display cabinets have different designs; some have grand glass doors that protect the contents of the cabinet where as some have an open top design with storage cupboards underneath.

Complimenting or Contrasting?

Choosing storage solutions can be difficult if your dining set doesn’t have matching ranges or if you want to create a contrasting look in your room. Your dining set is always the first piece of furniture that people notice when they walk in; choosing a piece of furniture that matches your table will blend into the surroundings making it less noticeable.

If you prefer your furniture to make a lasting impression then choosing a contrasting piece of furniture will stand out against your dining set and create a visually exciting look in your dining room. Creating your contrasting look needs to be done tastefully, placing a dark wooden table with a white wooden sideboard will create the look beautifully.

Maximum Storage Space Required

You can maximise the storage space in your dining room by mixing storage solutions together. If you have a small dining room than placing a sideboard with storage shelves above it can create a unique compact look that is eye catching.

If you have a larger dining room than you may want to add a sideboard with a bookcase or display cabinet. Placing the storage pieces at different parts of the room will provide a spacious feel without cluttering the room.

How To Create The Perfect Family Dining Room

Family Dining Room Tips

With today’s hectic lifestyles, many of us struggle to spend quality time with our families, and sitting down for meals together can be the only time we are able to reconnect. Mealtimes offer a wonderful opportunity to relax with the family, recharge our batteries, discuss the events of the day and catch up on everyone’s news. With that in mind, we look at how you create a warm and welcoming dining area in your home that will help to bring your family closer together.

Planning your space

Before you start designing your family dining area, make sure you have a clear understanding of your needs as this can help you achieve a better end result. How many people do you need to seat on a typical day, and will this ever increase – for example, if you invite guests over for dinner or your children bringing their friends home for tea? Do you need to store anything such as crockery, occasional items, table linen and other dining room essentials in the space? What sort of look would you like to achieve: clean and contemporary, bright and cheery, or perhaps traditional and elegant?

A great way to find ideas for your new dining area is to use sites such as Pinterest which is packed with fantastic images to inspire you. Create a Pinterest board and pin all your favourite images to it, including any items of furniture, wallpaper and wall art that you love the look of. Using a Pinterest board will help you plan the space, narrow down your ideas and visualise the end result.

Choosing the perfect table

It goes without saying that the perfect table should have room for all of your family to sit comfortably, but sometimes, you’ll also to be able to accommodate guests. An extendable table is a great choice here, giving you extra space when you need it without taking up room when you don’t.

You also need to consider what material your table should be made from. If you have young children, white lacquer or high gloss finishes are a great choice as they can be easily cleaned and are forgiving of a few smudgy finger marks. Glass is also a good wipe-clean choice, although less so if your table is near a window as marks will be more visible. If you have young children and you like the look of glass, a circular glass table will be a better choice – little ones don’t always look where they are going, and sharp glass corners aren’t as easy to see as solid corners. If you’d rather have a rectangular table, a chunkier design in white gloss such as the extending Frances dining table will be more child friendly than a thin top, which children may run into.

If you have older children, you’ll have a wider range of options including gorgeous smoked glass, expensive looking marble or beautiful warm natural wood. Whichever you choose, it’s still a good idea to protect your table with an inexpensive cloth for day-to-day dining to ensure it stays looking beautiful for longer.

Finding the best seats

In a family dining room, seating has to stand up to a lot of wear and tear, especially if you have younger children who are much better at climbing than sitting still. Plastic seating is, of course, a cheap, cheerful and durable choice that is easy to wipe clean and will last you a long time.

However, if you’d rather have something more comfortable and attractive, faux leather is an excellent choice. Like plastic, it’s wipe clean, but you’ll benefit from a comfy chair pad and seat back, and a much more stylish appearance. If you’re set on fabric chairs, consider buying a bench for one side of the table that your younger kids can sit on. Benches are not only a good, hard-wearing seat option for kids, but they can often be tucked right under one side of the table, freeing up space in your dining area when it’s not in use.

If you’re not convinced that faux leather or fabric chairs will stand up to your little ones’ antics, have a look at the huge range of polycarbonate chairs available. There are some gorgeous designs that prove plastic seating doesn’t have to look cheap: a favourite is this beautiful Crystal Clear chair with its gorgeous tree-like appearance, which can be conveniently stacked when not in use.

Choosing storage

Storage is essential in the family dining room so that everything you need is close at hand and your table is kept free from clutter. A storage unit will house everything your dining area needs, from occasional crockery and best glasses , through to place mats, drinks mats, spare candles, decorative accessories and even board games. In many dining areas, space is at a premium and a slim sideboard can be the perfect answer to your storage requirements. If you have young children, look for a sturdy piece that can’t be easily tipped – one that is close to the floor with small or low legs such as the Willow 3 door 3 drawer sideboard will be the best option.

As your sideboard doesn’t tend to get used for food or drinks, you have a wider range of choices when it comes to finishes. However, with young kids in the house, you’ll still need to keep an eye out for sharp corners, and a slightly taller chunkier unit is advisable if you have tiny tots who are still finding their feet.

Decorating

Once you’ve decided on your key furniture pieces, it’s time to get creative with your décor. Some great colour choices for the dining room include:

Orange – linked to stability, warmth and reassurance, and thought to aid digestion.

Yellow – associated with sunshine and energy, and thought to stimulate the intellect.

Red – correlates with energy, warmth, adventure and optimism, promotes sociable and lively feelings and is thought to stimulate the appetite.

These vibrant colours can look rather overbearing if used in blocks, so wallpaper can be a better choice – try Kelly Hoppen’s sumptuous red and black floral pattern or Barbara Hulanicki’s fabulous Ophelia florals for a stunning and sophisticated backdrop to your dining space. The finishing touch is beautiful wall art – pick something that all the family will love, such as this charming beach scene which will remind the kids of their favourite family holidays.

How To Host & Entertain At Home

Preparing your Space

Your dining room is the perfect spot to entertain your guests as it should provide enough seating for everyone to have there own space. When preparing the space in your dining room think about the size of your table, will you be able to host a comfortable sit down meal or would it be more appropriate and relaxing.

Host a buffet where you can place the food on a side table and keep the space on your dining table for plates and drinks only.

The Table & Chairs

Having the right table and chairs can help to accommodate you and your guests and set the mood for a fantastic evening of entertainment.

Extending Tables
Extending dining tables are an excellent investment as it allows you to enjoy a modern or contemporary dining table that can seat 4 people at its smallest stance or fold your dining table out to its full capacity and you can seat additional people for entertaining. Round dining tables are also excellent for entertaining as you can seat additional people around the table without having someone sat with a table leg in the way.

Hosting
When hosting a party you may need additional chairs to place around the table, purchasing stack able or folding chairs are great for storing away and will ensure all your chairs are matching. Chairs provide the comfort for your guests so making sure your chair has padding or suitable back rests is essential.

Dressing your Dining Table

Dressing your table is a unique way of making your guests feel welcome and also a way of showing your design skills off to your family and friends. Dressing your table with a nice table runner and matching fabric napkins will provide an inviting feel that will make your guests want to take a seat. When choosing your colour scheme for your table make sure it compliments your dining room so everything blends together.

If you are placing platters of food on your table you may want to think about having a small centre piece that will allow people to pass plates and socialise easily, if however you are serving a buffet on another table then there is an option for a larger centre piece.

Centre pieces are great to add as a focal point or even conversation starter. Placing items like candelabras or flower arrangements add a beautiful flare to the room.

A party is always a great excuse to pull out the best silverware. Placing your cookery neatly on the table for your starter, main meal and desert will provide your guests with all they need to enjoy there meal with minimal fuss.

Modern Dining Room

Glass or Gloss?

Choosing between a gloss and glass dining set for your modern dining room can be a difficult decision. Both materials have beautiful modern structures that are both durable and fresh. The bright, airy materials create a sense of space with minimal fuss that will look amazing in your room. Both materials are easy to care for and are both low in maintenance.

White gloss dining tables are a popular choice as they provide a beautiful modern look that will suit any décor. White gloss tables can be matched with leather, material or wooden chairs and still look amazing.

The Frances White Gloss Dining Table is featured with multi coloured chairs that will add a burst of colour into your modern dining room and create more options for decorating and accessorising your room.

Glass dining tables are available in a choice of clear, black or frosted glass finishes so you can find a glass table to suit your needs and preferences. Glass tables have an eye catching design that can be matched with any style of chair.

To compliment the stunning structure of the glass table we would recommend a faux leather or fabric material as this will complete the modern style and offer an aesthetically pleasing design.

Do I need other furniture

Your dining room doesn’t have to feature multiple pieces of furniture, keeping it light and airy with minimum fuss will help to create a modern look. If you have a large dining room and you have chosen a smaller dining set then placing a sideboard or display cabinet in the room will complement the look whilst still providing a large spacious style.

If you have a smaller dining room then placing a dining set only would be perfect, you can however add shelves for storage without adding a cluttered feel.

Accessorising Your Room

Accessorising you dining room can be a fun process as you can be as crazy or as neutral as you want. Placing beautiful canvases or whacky wall art on the walls can add a burst of colour into the room as well as create a focal point for conversation. Placing mirrors on the walls can create a sense of space and can brighten your room.

Dining sets offer there own unique appeal that is eye catching in any room, placing a centre piece on your table is completely optional and doesn’t have to be essential. If you would prefer to place a centre piece on your dining table then choosing items with height like flowers, candles or vases will enhance the modern look. If you prefer to keep your dining table clear then placing a low light fitting above the centre of your dining table is a unique alternative that will complete the look of your modern dining set.

Dining rooms should have a warm feel with a homely appeal that you will want to spend time in. Placing rugs under your dining set is a fantastic way of adding warmth to the room. When choosing the right rug for your dining room try not to place anything to fussy and keep the colour to a neutral colour as you do not want to draw the focus away from your dining set.

Using your bookcase as a centre piece

Bookcases at FADS.co.uk

A Bookcase has a low or tall design and can be featured in any room in your home and can therefore be used as a great alternative for dividing your living area.

Bookcases that are used to divide your space usually have an open back design which is great for keeping your room bright and airy. When accessorising your bookcase divider it is a good idea to display plants, vases and small tea light holders, this will keep your bookcase minimalistic and modern.

Organising Your Bookcase

Adding your own personality and stylish flare to your bookcase will create a unique look that is both eye catching and contemporary. Placing books on your bookcase doesn’t mean they have to be carefully placed in alphabetical order, breaking the traditional mould will help you create a more modern look.

Placing your books horizontally and vertically in groups of colour can give that extra visual appeal to your shelves. Horizontal stacked books can be used as platforms to store tea light holders or small trophies that will exhibit your smaller goods to there full potential.

Once you are happy with your uniquely placed books, its time to think about accessories. When choosing which items to display think about using a colour scheme, keeping to a few simple shades will add to the over all effect. Bookcases come in different designs, depending on your design will result in how you display your accessories.

How to Group Your Bookcase

Triangle Method:
Placing your accessories in a triangular shaped method on your bookcase will help bring order to your shelves. Your triangular shape can be created side ways, upside down or normal. Using a mixture of large and small objects will add to the effect and create a beautiful visual piece.

Grouped Method:
If your bookshelf has large shelves you can group your objects together, for example placing three small frames together will form a striking look, try this effect with other objects like trophies, tea lights and plates.

Introducing Colour

Add interest to the back of your bookcase by adding a splash of colour or decorative wallpaper. Some bookcases come with a standard back board that stops your books from falling through, having a back board allows you to add paint or wallpaper to your bookcase.

Using bright or bold colours on the back board will add personality to your bookcase, however be careful to consider your main colour scheme in the room, placing a yellow bookcase against a red wall may clash.

You can place your bookshelf against a feature wall If you bookcase has an open back design, this will still create a unique look without having to worry about clashing your colour schemes.
